He was known as the Voice of the Burdekin and over the many years he participated in Amateur Radio he was active in Field Days, DXing on HF, 6metres and VHF, a regular participant on radio nets and really enjoyed a good Monster Auction from time to time. All this plus an avid Bike Speedway competitor in his younger years, a team member that kept the Inkerman Sugar Mill operating, a volunteer at the start of Community Radio Sweet FM Burdekin, an active member of the Ayr Motorcycle Club plus much more. Mark was a long time member of The Townsville Amateur Radio Club Inc. and the Wireless Institute of Australia and when his health deteriorated to the extent that stopped his radio activities still kept in touch on the nets through Echolink. (Townsville Amateur Radio Club Inc.) --------------------------------------------------------------------* Hello, I’m Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I’ve been thinking. There is a sense of surprise amongst many people that it has only technically turned the page into the chapter that we call summer and already the country has been experiencing record rain falls and flooding whilst in Queensland we have not yet reached the start of the cyclone season. La Nina is wringing out the clouds and ensuring we are well washed. Close by to where I live, November recorded a 49 year high rainfall and in my own town the sodden ground has caused massive run off and flash flooding. I am no sage but I have suggested that we should be prepared for weather extremes and the authorities are advising that we follow the various outlets that supply information for our own safety. A good place to start is with the Disaster Dashboard that major councils provide on their web sites. Here you will find access to weather, roads, flooding and many other pieces of information to assist in keeping us advised and prepared. No doubt many clubs have managed to have a Christmas type get-together or will be do so in the next couple of weeks. In my area it is a few years since 7 day trading became part of the life style and we can head off and replenish low stocks any day of the week. Yes I know that education and some areas of the public service along with many trades take the summer break to recharge the personal energy stocks. It seems each year, I raise the possibility of clubs being able to have programs and open doors to help break the holiday routine. How many clubs can and do run summer programs for people looking to gain a licence? How many clubs have a regular open door drop-in session for members and visitors? How many clubs do things to help members take advantage of the summer contests? It is an interesting way to spend some time asking what is happening in the areas that clubs service. Now is the time to record a short spot for QNEWS or your local news service letting visitors, who may be planning their holiday break, know the best contact repeater to use and when they can drop in for a meet and greet. Just a reminder that it looks more and more probable that we will have a Federal election in the first half of next year. As the candidates will be wanting to wrap up their business for the holidays and get ready for campaigning, if you have issues that relate to amateur radio specifically and associated issues, I suggest you make contact soon and give the friendly reminder that there are voters with special interests. Stay safe and best wishes for the coming period. Let’s hope it is dry for the Christmas backyard cricket and DX is good.
